Hello Joe,
No one really knows for sure how animals might reabsorb their young during pregnancy. It is thought that this could occur when there are not enough resources available for the mother to nourish her pups both while in utero as well as as running pups. It could even happen when there is a trauma to the mother. It is an amazing phenomenon that is not fully understood.
