: why is yellowstone called yellowstone?
The name "Yellowstone" goes back to when French-Canadian trappers encountered the Minnetaree tribe along a river in what is now Eastern Montana. When asked the name of the river, the Minnetaree responded "Mi-tse a da-zi" which translates as "Rock Yellow River", which eventually became known as "Yellowstone". This river, of course, was the Yellowstone River, which flows out of the area which would later become known as Yellowstone National Park.
