Thanks for your question, Derek! Wolves are an endangered species, which means that it is illegal to shot or kill one. In Yellowstone they have been given the designation of "a threatened, non-essential" population to allow for management flexibility. Part of the reason for this is to allow especially designated officials in the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service to kill a wolf, if necessary (for instance, if it is killing someone's livestock).
