: Why are the trumpeter swans located in North America and Canada?

Thanks for your question, Lindsey. The trumpeter swan is limited in the variety of habitat it will accept as breeding grounds. This species prefers quiet, shallow waters, such as those found in interconnected shallow marshes and lakes, lakes within forest or sagebrush habitat, and still rivers. In areas such as these, small islands, thick vegetation, or muskrat/beaver dams often provide nesting sites. They also need waters that provide dense aquatic plants and invertebrates to provide necessary nutrients. Trumpeter swans typically breed in Open Boreal forest and (near the southern end of their range) in Closed Boreal forest, Montane Pine, Eastern Deciduous Forest, Short Grass Praire, and Tall Grass Prairie Life Zones. Parts of the United States and Canada fulfill all of these requirements.
