Thanks for your question, Maki! President Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to explore the Missouri River in 1804. Although Lewis and Clark bypassed the Yellowstone area, a previous member of their expedition, John Colter visited the region several years later in 1807-08. He made note of the presence of "Hot Spring Brimstone". Other trappers and miners had throughly tracked Yellowstone and left verbal accounts before the first official expeditions in 1869.
