: how long do fire last?
Hi Micah. The length of time a fire lasts depends on a couple of things. First, the weather conditions affect how long they burn, and second, whether or not the fire is fought can affect how long. Dry windy conditions can allow for fires to burn longer. For instance, last year the Sulphur Fire smoldered for a week after lightning struck a tree until the winds picked up and pushed it across 2,000 acres in a day. Not much happened for another month until the winds picked up again. It burned from mid August until mid October when snow fell and put it out. Sometimes human efforts can cut the life of a fire short. This year because of the extreme dry conditions all fires were fought, and many lasted only a few hours to a day or so.
