Background for Students
Where do you live—in a house, in an apartment,
in an urban neighborhood, or out in the country?
Do you have your own bedroom, or do you share
one? We all have our space—our own territory.
Wolves are no different. They live in a pack and
set up a home area where they live, hunt, sleep,
and raise their young.
For almost 70 years, wolves did not live in Yellowstone
National Park. The last wolf in the park was killed
in 1926, and it was not until 1995, that wolves
were returned. The wolves were brought to the
park from Canada. Would the wolves go home to
Canada, or would they establish new territories
in the park?
Procedure
The instructor will:
1. Distribute a Coordinate Point worksheet to
each student.
2. If a computer lab is available, have students
complete the map by using Excel to enter their
coordinates. (See Completed Map and Step by
Step Instructions for Map.) If a computer lab
and Excel are not available, have students mark
the X and Y axis on graph paper and plot each
group of coordinate points from their worksheets
onto the graph.
3. Have students connect the coordinate points
within a group to each other. This creates the
territory/pack boundaries.
4. Instruct students to compare their boundaries
to the actual the 1995/1996 Pack Map.
5. Have students label the park and pack territories
based on their comparisons.
