Many early colonists believed that the only good wolf was a dead wolf. Ten years after the first colonists landed on Plymouth Rock, the first wolf bounty law was passed in Massachusetts Bay Colony. Twenty shillings, which was equivalent to a modest month's salary, were paid to anyone who could successfully capture and kill a wolf.
