A lone wolf howls.

What image comes to mind when you think of a wolf? Although no wild, healthy wolf has ever killed a human in the lower forty-eight states, many of us were raised on tales such as Little Red-Riding Hood or have had nightmares from horror stories about werewolves. The thought of being alone at night, far from shelter, and hearing a wolf howl, or the crunch of giant paws, is enough to make shivers creep down our spines. Maybe is not so difficult then, to understand the fears of North America's early colonists. These people feared wolves because of stories and traditions passed down for generations. Remember, in those days the wild world was right outside the doorstep, help was often far off, and the great gray wolf ranged throughout North America. .
