While
most trumpeter swans migrated hundreds of miles, falling prey
to hunters' bullets or risking death from other dangers on the
long journey, a small group of these birds survived by remaining
year-round in the vast wilderness of the Yellowstone region. Not
only did this area contain suitable habitat, but also Yellowstone
National Park is a place where wildlife is protected by law. Thus
the park became a last stronghold for the trumpeter swan.
