While most trumpeter swans migrated hundreds of miles, falling prey to hunters' bullets or risking death from other dangers on the long journey, a small group of these birds survived by remaining year-round in the vast wilderness of the Yellowstone region. Not only did this area contain suitable habitat, but also Yellowstone National Park is a place where wildlife is protected by law. Thus the park became a last stronghold for the trumpeter swan.
