Background
Students will approach this eTrip with varying levels of subject matter familiarity and interest. To assess educational benefit and comprehension of the eTrip content, instructors may find it useful to administer the same test given prior to and upon completion of Hot Colors-Windows into Hidden Worlds.
Procedure
The instructor will
1. Administer the microorganism quiz (Attachment A) to the students prior to the electronic field trip.
2. Direct students to check their answers online, make note of the results, and email results to Yellowstone National Park, indicating if this is a pre-trip or post trip test. An alternative is to have students exchange papers and grade the quizzes (Answer Key: Attachment B).
3. Instruct students to explore the electronic field trip.
4. Instruct students to post questions regarding Yellowstone's microorganisms to subject matter experts on the electronic field trip's "Ask an Expert" message board.
5. Instruct students to read the responses to their questions from subject matter experts.
6. Administer the microorganism quiz (Attachment A) to students again upon completion of the electronic field trip.
7. Instruct students to check their answers online, make note of the results, and email results to Yellowstone National Park. Be sure to indicate if this is a pre or post trip quiz. An alternative is to have students exchange papers and grade the quizzes (Answer Key: Attachment B).
8. Make an assessment on the learning experience by examining the pre and post trip scores.
Extension
Repeat the quiz six months later to test long-term retention of information.
