As our country entered World War II, Yellowstone fought a few battles of its own. Many of the rangers and members of the Civilian Conservation Corps enlisted in the military. There were few visitors due to the rationing of gasoline and other commodities. Funding was redirected to the war effort, leaving a backlog of maintenance needs and park projects half-completed. Once the war ended, visitation jumped again, breaking the one million mark in 1948, and placing heavy stress on neglected facilities. |
