Yellowstone National Park's First 130 Years

Museum at the Norris Geyser Basin

By the 1920s, people were being encouraged to "See America First" and the world was going on wheels. Visitors flocked to the national parks, eager to learn more about them. Recognizing the need and opportunity for education in the parks, the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial donated funds for the construction of four trailside museums in Yellowstone. They were located at points of major interest in the park (Old Faithful, Norris, Madison, and Fishing Bridge), each separated by (at that time) "an easy day's journey". Construction began first at Old Faithful in 1928 and the museum opened its doors in 1929.
