Even the most experienced professional firefighters met with conditions and difficulties they had rarely seen before. For example, one accepted method of controlling fire is to make a “fire line”. This means creating a swath of bare earth, leaving behind nothing to provide fuel for a fire. On large burns, bulldozers are sometimes used to make sure that the fire line is wide enough.
