The Secretary of the Interior, after visiting Yellowstone on July 27, agreed that the natural fire program had to be temporarily suspended.

In July and August many new wildfires were started by dry lightning storms (little rain, but lots of lightning). Other fires, including some caused by people, began outside of the park, but soon burned into Yellowstone.
