Grizzly
Bear Cubs Less than One Year Old
|
The cubs are born during their mother’s hibernation
period. Can you imagine going to sleep alone for four months and
waking up to several new children? Bears do just that! The mother
becomes semiconscious during the birth, but after delivery she
continues to sleep for another two months. Grizzly cubs weigh
about one pound at birth (half a pound for black bears) and alternate
between sleeping and suckling their mother’s milk. Both black
and grizzly bears give birth to litters of 1 - 4 cubs. The newborns
are blind, toothless, and nearly hairless. Cubs survive on their
mother’s milk until they emerge from their den with their mother. |
