These two grizzly bears are cubs less than one year old. They are often referred to as Cubs-of-theyear.

Grizzly Bear Cubs Less than One Year Old

The cubs are born during their motherís hibernation period. Can you imagine going to sleep alone for four months and waking up to several new children? Bears do just that! The mother becomes semiconscious during the birth, but after delivery she continues to sleep for another two months. Grizzly cubs weigh about one pound at birth (half a pound for black bears) and alternate between sleeping and suckling their motherís milk. Both black and grizzly bears give birth to litters of 1 - 4 cubs. The newborns are blind, toothless, and nearly hairless. Cubs survive on their motherís milk until they emerge from their den with their mother.
